Find out if your jaw is contributing to your headaches
At Cedar Village Dentistry, our dentists evaluate your teeth, jaw joints, muscles, and symptoms to help determine whether a temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, could be contributing to your discomfort.

Could your jaw be contributing to your headaches?
It’s possible, but headaches can have many causes. Temporomandibular disorders affect the jaw joints and the muscles that control jaw movement. Some people with TMD also experience headaches, facial pain, or discomfort around the temples.
A dental evaluation can help determine whether your jaw, teeth, or chewing muscles may be contributing to your symptoms.
Signs it may be time to have your jaw checked
Consider scheduling an evaluation if you regularly experience:
- Jaw pain or tenderness
- Pain while chewing
- Painful clicking, popping, or grinding
- Difficulty opening your mouth comfortably
- A jaw that locks or feels stuck
- Facial or temple pain
- Morning jaw soreness
- Headaches along with jaw pain or tightness
- Signs of teeth grinding or clenching
Clicking or popping without pain is common and doesn’t always require treatment. If you’re unsure what your symptoms mean, an exam can help you decide what to do next.
TMJ vs. TMD: What’s the difference?
TMJ
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. You have one of these joints on each side of your jaw.
TMD
TMD stands for temporomandibular disorder. It describes a group of conditions that can affect the jaw joints, chewing muscles, and surrounding structures.
People often use “TMJ” when talking about jaw problems, but TMD is the more accurate term for the disorder itself.
What can contribute to jaw pain?
Jaw pain doesn’t have one universal cause. Your dentist may consider factors such as:
Teeth grinding or clenching
Jaw or facial injuries
Muscle tension
Arthritis or other joint conditions
Problems affecting the jaw joint itself
Because jaw and facial pain can overlap with other medical conditions, getting the right diagnosis matters before choosing treatment.
How we evaluate TMJ and jaw pain in Mason
There isn’t one test that diagnoses every TMD. Your evaluation may include a conversation about your symptoms and medical history, followed by an examination of your teeth, bite, jaw movement, joints, and chewing muscles. Depending on what we find, our dentists may also recommend diagnostic imaging.
You can learn more about the technology available at Cedar Village Dentistry on our Dental Technology page.
We look beyond the headache
A headache by itself doesn’t mean you have TMD. We’ll ask where your pain occurs, when it happens, what makes it better or worse, and whether you also experience symptoms such as jaw tenderness, limited movement, grinding, or clenching.
The goal is to understand whether your oral health or jaw may play a role and whether you need dental treatment, monitoring, or evaluation by another healthcare provider.
What treatments may help with TMJ symptoms?
Treatment depends on what’s causing your symptoms. Many TMD problems can improve with conservative approaches. Your dentist may discuss options based on your exam, symptoms, and diagnosis rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Custom night guards for grinding and clenching
If you grind or clench your teeth, an oral appliance may help protect your teeth from excessive wear. Cedar Village Dentistry provides custom night guards in Mason for patients with signs of bruxism.
A night guard isn’t the right treatment for every type of TMD, so we’ll first evaluate your symptoms and determine whether one makes sense for you.
Sedation for patients with dental anxiety
Jaw pain or dental anxiety shouldn’t keep you from getting evaluated. Cedar Village Dentistry offers sedation dentistry, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation for appropriate patients and procedures.
Tell us about your concerns when you schedule so we can discuss the comfort options available for your visit.
When a headache needs medical attention
Not every headache comes from your jaw. If you have recurring or unexplained headaches, talk with an appropriate healthcare provider. A dentist can evaluate potential dental and jaw-related contributors, but other causes may require medical evaluation.
Seek urgent medical care for a sudden, extremely severe headache or a headache accompanied by concerning symptoms such as weakness, confusion, fainting, trouble speaking, or significant vision changes.

TMJ and headache FAQs
Can TMJ problems cause headaches?
TMD can be associated with headaches, particularly when jaw pain or muscle tenderness occurs at the same time. However, headaches have many possible causes. A dental evaluation can help determine whether your jaw may be contributing to your symptoms.
How can I tell if my headache may be related to my jaw?
Headaches that occur along with jaw soreness, painful chewing, clenching, grinding, limited jaw movement, or facial pain may warrant a jaw evaluation.
These symptoms don’t prove that TMD is the cause, so your dentist will consider the full pattern of symptoms before recommending treatment.
Can teeth grinding cause jaw pain and headaches?
Grinding and clenching can place additional stress on your teeth and chewing muscles. Some people who grind their teeth also experience morning jaw soreness, facial discomfort, or headaches.
If we see signs of bruxism, we may discuss whether a custom night guard could help protect your teeth.
Does jaw clicking mean I have TMD?
Not necessarily. Jaw clicking or popping without pain is common and may not require treatment. Painful clicking, locking, limited movement, or other symptoms are stronger reasons to schedule an evaluation.
Do you use 3D imaging to evaluate jaw problems?
Our practice offers advanced dental technology, including 3D imaging technology. Your dentist will determine whether imaging would provide useful information for your specific symptoms. Not every patient with jaw pain needs imaging.
Are night guards a treatment for TMJ?
Night guards can protect the teeth from grinding and clenching, but they aren’t the right treatment for every TMD.
Your dentist will evaluate your teeth, jaw, and symptoms before recommending an appliance. Learn more about our custom night guards.
When should I see a dentist for jaw pain?
Schedule an evaluation if jaw pain keeps returning, interferes with eating or opening your mouth, occurs with painful clicking or locking, or appears alongside signs of grinding or clenching.
